Wild Food Weekend Intensive August 10th & 11th 2013
“If we eat the wild, it begins to work inside us, altering us, changing us. Soon, if we eat too much, we will no longer fit into the suit that has been made for us. Our hair will being to grow long and ragged. Our gait and how we hold our body will change. Our words will start to sound strange and nonlinear. Emotion. Unpractical. Poetic. Once we have tasted this wildness, we begin to hunger for a food long denied us, and the more we eat the more we will awaken.”
– Stephen Harrod Buhner, The Secret Teachings of Plants
Saturday August 10th: Join Shamanic Herbalist Kristen Dorsey of Divine Journeys for a day of edible wild plant identification, harvest and preparation. Gain valuable plant identification skills. Eat delicious foods & drink beverages prepared with the wild plants you will meet. Learn to incorporate these wild foods into your daily meals in such a way that the entire family will enjoy them.
Sunday August 11th: Join Primitive Skills Instructor Jason Drevenak of the North American Bushcraft School for a day of firepit cooking. When human ancestors first used fire to “cook” food, they tapped into a skill that would allow them to thrive on every part of our planet. This one day workshop shows you how to prepare a complete meal without using electricity or prefabricated cooking utensils. We will learn coal cooking, hot rock griddles, boiling water, spits, tripods and steam pits. We will make cooking and eating utensils and learn to manage heat with wood types and fire pit design.
The skills you will learn during this weekend event are invaluable. Monoculture (planting huge farms of one crop) has consistently lowered the nutritional value of our vegetables and fruits by breeding for traits like size, uniformity and fast growth. Most of our farmed foods are now genetically modified as well. Wild plants and game are the truest expression of organic, minimally processed, highly nutritious foods. Every person on Earth should have the skills for foraging their own food!
We live in uncertain times. Being prepared to survive during an emergency is a valuable skill. Participants will learn how to identify, gather, process and prepare wild plants. But what if there is no electricity? Knowing how to create a primitive kitchen from the Earth- oven, cooktop, grill- ensures that your family will always eat- and eat vibrantly well. No matter what.
Finally, knowing what is edible and nutritious in your yard encourages RESPECT for the Earth. Changing our paradigm about “weeds” from pest to powerful ally connects us to our land. It is hard to justify herbicide and pesticide use on our patch of Earth when we understand the gifts that live right under our feet.
